How to Prepare for a Senior School Art Scholarship Application

Writer: Kim VenterKim Venter

If your child has a passion for art and you’re considering private education, an art scholarship could be a fantastic opportunity. Gaining a scholarship not only provides financial benefits but also allows young artists to develop their talents in a stimulating and supportive environment. However, the application process can be competitive, requiring a well-prepared portfolio and strong technical skills. Here’s how to set your child up for success.

Building a Strong Portfolio

A key part of any art scholarship application is the portfolio. Most schools require at least 30 pieces of artwork demonstrating a range of skills and techniques. While not all of a child’s artwork will be included in the final submission, it’s important to have a large selection to choose from. Schools typically look for variety, so make sure the portfolio includes:

  • Sketching and shading – Pencil, pen, or fine liner drawings showcasing control over tone and detail.

  • Acrylic painting – Exploring colour mixing, texture, and different painting techniques.

  • Watercolours – Demonstrating light washes, layering, and precision.

  • Collage – Mixed media pieces that show creativity and composition.

  • Charcoal drawings – Highlighting strong contrast and depth.

  • Pastel work – Soft or oil pastels to show blending and layering.

  • Printmaking – Simple techniques such as lino printing, monoprinting, or block printing.

  • 3D work – Sculptures or models using clay, wire, or papier-mâché.

Having a well-rounded portfolio not only highlights technical ability but also creative thinking and artistic exploration.

When to Start Preparing

The earlier, the better! While any time is a great time to begin building a portfolio, starting around Year 3 gives children plenty of time to develop their skills without feeling rushed. Since applications typically need to be submitted in the middle of Year 6, beginning preparation two to three years in advance allows for gradual improvement and a stress-free approach.

Encourage regular practice, experimentation with different mediums, and sketchbook work to refine technique and develop confidence.

Art Scholarship Assessment Day: What to Expect

Most schools will invite shortlisted applicants for an art scholarship assessment day, which generally includes:

  • An interview – The child will be asked about their artistic interests, inspirations, and experience.

  • A practical drawing or painting task – They may be given a subject to draw or paint, often within a time limit.

  • Portfolio review – The panel will look through the portfolio and ask the child to explain some of their pieces, discussing techniques used and artistic choices made.

Top Tips for Scholarship Success

  1. Be prepared for the practical task – Practice drawing or painting subjects you feel confident with, ensuring you can produce something impressive under time pressure.

  2. Know your portfolio – Be ready to talk about your favourite pieces, why you created them, and the techniques used.

  3. Show enthusiasm – Schools are looking for genuine passion for art, so speak confidently about your creative journey.

  4. Refine your technical skills – Ensure your drawing, shading, and painting techniques are as strong as possible.

  5. Stay calm and enjoy the process – Even if the scholarship isn’t awarded, preparing for it will build valuable skills that will benefit any future artistic endeavours.
